Ubuntu/Virtual Box vs Windows XP mode in Windows 7

Hello,

I am new here, not an IT pro, but I understand some things :-)

On My desktop PC, I use Windows 7 64 bits. For some types of work
(technical translation) I need some applications (dictionaries) that
needed to be installed in Windows XP mode. I do not only translations,
so I do not use them every week, not even every month.
Lately, these applications no longer wish to start. Because I don't need
it on a regular basis, I cannot be more accurate than "lately".

About a year ago (or more) I played with Virtual box, just to see if I
could manage to install Ubuntu in it.
I succeeded in getting Ubuntu to work, almost out of the box. Internet
worked, I could transfer data to and from it, well, I had a new working
OS that I did not need at all.
I do not remember what I configured.

Now that Windows XP becomres stubborn, I had another look at Ubuntu in
Virtual box. It still works, but I can't reach the internet. It also
does not see the SOHO network. On the router, I do not see the virtual
network card.

My question: Do the experts here see a relation between the way Windoes
XP Mode and Ubuntu in Virtual Box (no longer) work?
What should I look at?
I have no idea.

I have made a copy of the Ubuntu vrtual machine, so I am not afraid of
trying something, but: WHAT?

Regards,

Leo

In such cases I've often seen problems in the Ubuntu guest. Go into
/etc/udev/rules.d and look for 70-persistent-net.rules files. If there
is one, delete this file. Then reboot. If you now have your networking
back with this guest then the udev rule was responsible for the
breakage. In that case you might also want to remove the rule which is
responsible for generating this rule: 75-persistent-net-generator.rules
in /lib/udev/rules.d. If you look at this file it contains a number of
exceptions for virtual interfaces.

After a lot of thinking and considering alternatives, I had the idea to
update to the newest version of VirtualBox. That is, I discarded the
virtual machines, uninstalled the old program version, and installed the
new one.
I installed the same Ubuntu from the CD, updated the new installation,
and back it was. Ubuntu working as before.

Encouraged with this experience I also removed the Microsoft Virtual XP
mode machine, installed a new one, and reinstalled my dictionaries.
Piece of cake, it worked again...

Being a simple layman, I guess that a Windows update partly broke the
connection metween the host OS , the Virtual machine programs and the
guest OSes in them.
Maybe I should open the Windows XP mode vitrual computer and the
VirtualBox every month to check for any updates.

Thanks for thinking with me...
