Discussion:
updated vboxvideo for illumos / solaris

Hi,
as we're working on our own new distro XStreamOS Desktop based on illumos, we've packaged the distro
with new updated X11 1.13.1
Problem is that installing the distro in VirtualBox, and installing the guets additions, video driver
doesn't install, because the vboxvideo is packaged for up to lower versions of X11 (maybe up to 1.11,
can't remember).
How can I build or get a copy of the vboxvideo built for 1.13.1?
Or, how can I force the distributed driver to work with the updated X11?
Thanks for any help
Gabriele.

Thanks, probably I'll have to build vbox from sources to have additions rebuilt against my system.
Is there any way to run only guest addition build + iso?

Is there any way to run only guest addition build + iso?
Guest additions have to be rebuild after a kernel ABI change anyway.

Usually, the command
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup
takes care of that (or DKMS).

The installation scripts contain compilation steps as well.
However, I'm not sure that's enough for your purpose.

I found how to do it: had to build the entire VirtualBox sources from scratch, build and install
into a prototype directory.
But first, I had to patch a couple of files to let it handle and prepare new X11 versions for Solaris.
Now I have the VBoxAdditions.pkg specific for our XStreamOS/illumos Desktop :)
If anyone is interested, I can provide the patches.
Gabriele.

Gabriele.
Thanks for the offer!. I'm not part of the dev team but as an end user I
really appreciate it.
If you dont get an answer here feel free to contact the devs directly. If
you check this list's archives for new version announcements you will find
the e-mail of at least one :)

Note to devs: perhaps it'd be possible to feature a section on the VBox
page linking to user-provided builds (as-is, of course-) I am thinking of
Mozilla's old 'ports' page as inspiration.

In my opinion, if the patch is good, it should be integrated into VBox
proper (but not necessarily used).

FreeBSD additions source code are integrated upstream into VBox code
tree, but Oracle build don't provide the binaries, so perhaps
something similar could be done here.

Good idea Alexey!
Complements my thought: if the code is added, but for whatever reason
Oracle doesnt want the responsability and cost (support, fixes, etc) of
providing its own IllumOS builds, it'd be a nice gesture to at least link
to those third party builds,ie "some people build VBox for other platforms,
here are the links to those community builds..."

There is a "VirtualBox OSE" section on the forums, where people can
put their 3rd party patches, such as my own "vbox-unattended".

To clarify the issue: this is not a patch for illumos (that is text-mode only),
but a way for any illumos-based desktop environment, or any solaris based desktop env, using
X11 libraries higher then the ones Oracle considers (up to 1.12 for Solaris 11).
In an env with X11 1.13 or higher the additions installer, not containing the video driver compiled
for that x11, will fail.
For other OS like Linux, there is code considering up to 1.15.
I believe the dev guys knows already about this, and update the necessary files for their
known X11 release (on Solaris).
Anyway, now I know how to have video drivers for my own X11 release on XStream Desktop.
Thanx!
Gabriele.
