I have been using VirtualBox for a number of years, mostly for using
WindowsXP under a Linux Host. There has never been a problem until today
:-(

Did a fresh install of LinuxMint, v 16, Petra and through the Software
Manager installed VirtualBox (non free version)

VrtualBox v4.3

Host: LinuxMint v16. Petra with the MATE DE

Guest: Windows XP Home

The following Error Message appears when attempting to install Window XP.

"Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP.

Failed to load VMMR0r0(VERR_SVM_DISABLED"

Clicking on Details, reveals

"Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0X800040005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole (8ab7c520-2442-4b666-8d74-4ff1e195d2b6)"

Is there someone on the list who can tell me what may have gone wrong,
please, and, even more importantly, how I may correct the error?

Hi David,

I don't have enough information (your VBox.log file is missing) but I assume
the following happens:

I assume you run VBox on a 64-bit AMD host but AMD-V is disabled. On 64-bit
hosts we assume that all guests can run in 64-bit mode which is not true in
your case.

How to fix: Either
1. Enable AMD-V in your BIOS settings (preferred) or
2. Execute 'VBoxManage modifyvm VM_NAME --longmode off' for your guest.

Kind regards,

Frank
