virtual disk versus host access

Hello,

I have mainly on my server photos and videos, so large size data
(around 200 Gb for now, expanding).

I would like to use for now on a virtual server (my new server will
have VT, 16Gb ram, 2x1To raid disk)

I wonder what is safer, to use a for example 500Gb virtual disk for
data or use a dedicated 500Gb partition accessed through virtual
network or shared folder.

I wonder this because of the upadtes (and then distro upgrade) that
could brake the shares

I use openSUSE, 12.3 for now and then 13.1 when available

thanks

I don't personally see either approach as "safer" than the other, the only
difference would be the ease of backing up data and moving it around (ie
copying a .vdi file to an external drive for off-site backup).
