I am running VirtualBox on a Windows 8.1 64-bit host operating system.
May I know where are virtual machine settings saved?

Are virtual machine settings saved in .vbox or .vbox-prev files?

They're saved in .vbox. The .vbox-prev is a backup of the .vbox file
before most recent changes were made to it as far as I know.
