Discussion:
WIN7 Image on VBOX issue

Hi,

I have a prebuilt - WIN7 on my laptop. I selected the backup option and created the backup image and bootable disk of WIN7.
Now, I want to run that image on the Virtual box, how can I do it? I could see that the bootable image created by WIN7 was not an ISO format.
Can you please tell me how can I run such image on the Virtual box?  The final aim is to wash away the prebuilt WIN7, install LINUX and run the
WIN7 on virtual box. I don't like running Linux on the Virtual box, thus I am doing this exercise. Can you please help me?

Thanks

I believe that what you created is not a bootable image of your
running desktop, but rather a bootable disk with a RESTORE PROGRAM to
restore your backup.

In any case, I think you could create a new virtualbox VM, make it
Win7, and before the first boot, make sure you have the bootable disk
mounted into the Virtualbox VM.

It is not clear from your post whether you have burned the boot CD to
a real (physical) CD-R o DVD-R, and where is your system backup stored
(internal hard drive, external HD? pen drive?).

As I can say that it is full legal to run your Win 7 in Virtualbox. It is in the Microsoft license.

It depends with what image software you make the image. With Acronis it is possible.

Kind regards,
Matthias

Matthias, I didn't think the original poster asked about the legality
of it, but how to do it, technically. At least I understood it that
way...

When I did this, I used the ISO for retail Windows, available from MS's
download site. Then I used the key from the license sticker on my laptop.

Thanks for the reply Tom, but please re-hread the OP's question. I
think hes asking how to boot his already created backup in a VM.

Thanks! Is the following product useful to me.
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/trueimage/thanks/?rr=%2Fproducts%2Ftryorbuy.html%23home&pn=ati2014&lsd=p%2CATI2014-Local%3Bna%2CATI2014-Cloud-Local-New%3Boa%2CATI2014-Cloud%3B&newuser=e&okcloud=r&ue=dexterous.me82%40yahoo.com

Also, What is the image type it will create? Will it create the ISO or any other format that is compatible with the Virtual box?

Thanks & regards,

Let me repeat: if you created a bootable restore cd and a backup of
your physical server, NOTHING -in theory- prevents you from using
Virtualbox for booting that restore CD/DVD and restoring that system
backup to an empty (new) virtual machine.

You dont need to buy anything or use any third party products for that.

You didnt answer if that bootable restore disc was burned to a
physical cd/dvd disc or saved as iso file, neither did you answer
about the location where that backup was saved to (c: drive, d:
external hard drive, x: pen drive, etc)

-> The bootable disc is burned in the disk. The bootable image has the following content.
a) boot.wim
b)boot.sdi
c)  bootfix.bin

The windows 7 didn't have the option to create an iso file of the backup.

The back up is stored in the E drive.
Please help, if you know some way.

Thanks & regards,
